Welcome to RIOT Scan

RIOT SCAN is no longer being developed. You are free to download and use this software, however, it has been shelved in favor of other projects.

If you are looking for free content coding software that allows you to use your own dictionary file, I highly recommend checking out BUTTER instead. It is faster, more accurate, open-source, and probably a bit easier to use 🙂

RIOT Scan is free software, programmed by myself, designed for the purpose of calculating meaningful indices of language as derived from text files. The primary mission of the RIOT Scan project is to provide a freely-available, powerful, and easy-to-use suite of language research options to those interested in what natural language can tell us about people.

A Brief History

In the beginning, I wanted to build a little program to calculate redundancy in natural language. Later, I felt that it was necessary to scan large amounts of text from different sources and compile various information about them in a single file. I could not find any good solution to do this for me (let alone a freely available one), so I created RIOT Scan.

Since its creation, the project has grown enormously and now includes prepackaged (as well as custom) content coding schemes in addition to lemmatisation and stemming features, making RIOT Scan a powerful little suite of tools for the inquisitive researcher. If you have any questions about the software, please read this site in its entirety. If you still have comments or questions (or especially if you find a bug!), feel free to send me an e-mail and I will do my best to answer any questions that you may have.

What am I Missing?

If you have a coding scheme that you would like to see included in the software, please let me know and I will do my best to include it. If your coding scheme is included, I will also be certain to include a proper citation for your work.
